Must you be able to draw to go into graphic design?
I'm sixteen and trying to start thinking about what kind of a career I can have and what I'm going to major in at college. I really have no remarkable skills or talent. However, I have always been very interested in graphic design. I've played around with it for years. I have Adobe Photoshop and spend hours on it at nights. But, I was reading that you have to be able to draw. That it helps with a portfolio when applying as well as conveying an idea to others. I can not draw. And, that is an understatement. I doodle on napkins and stuff. But, I can't draw anything realistic looking. My proportions are always way off. I practice every day. I usually do about thirty minutes and then have to just come back to it later because I get so frustrated.
Am I just screwed? Do you really need to be a reasonable artist to go into graphic design?
Well it would be a plus if you knew how to draw and some stuff would be a lot more easier. In the profession, some say you have to know how to draw to at least understand the basics or graphic design. It is not only about being able to generate something on the computer. You have to know how to do sketch for the clients when needed. Some will even recommend you to touch the computer only when you'll be done on paper.
Some designers only use the computer and it gives great effects.
Usually when you apply for a graphic design school, your entry is based on your capacity to draw and creativity (maybe some schools don't, but mainly they do), your portfolio.
For example, in the university here, you have to take arts class to draw inside the graphic design program.
You can always do it all on computer only, but it's way easier when you know how to do both: drawings and computer designs.
I hope it helped!
