What techniques are used in Photoshop for these designs?
I am using Craig Ward as an inspirational artist for my Graphics project, and one of the things we are required to do is artist inspired work.
I really like these pieces...

...but I'm not sure how to re-create them in Photoshop. Any ideas?

You could get a similar effect if you use custom brushes and a little hand painting. You can download custom brushes online or make your own. I would suggest you make your own so you have the most control, you can use almost any image to create a custom brush or texture.
Once you have your brush choose a font you like, erase some parts away, and then paint them back in with your brush. Then go back and refine the details with the normal brushes. It looks like he may have played around with the liquefy filter too.
