Hot to use patterns on photoshop?

I've downloaded a set of patterns (.pat) and I've gone to adobe photoshop CS3 Edit>Presets Manager > Patterns and I can see the patterns.
However how do I open them and put them on a new canvas so I can use them?

you define an area with the lasso, magic wand, rectangle, ect. any selection tool. you have an active area selected. Then you fill and that dialog will have 'with pattern' same as filling with fill with foreground, or fill with background
