Photoshop Quick Mask

After I use the quick mask in photoshop, it doesn't show as a selection, help!?
I found that by using the quick mask mode in PS I can brush in a color, then when I go to standard mode and it will show as the area being selected.
It's worked for me before, but now when I switch to QM mode, the color in the box turns grey even though it still shows up as red. But after I go back to Standard Mode, it doesn't select the area I just brushed over.
Did my settings get changed somehow??
FERDBERFEL I tried the HIDDEN/UNHIDDEN setting and the *marching ants* still don't show up
And don't worry, I don't DL everything people tell me to!
First of all, don't go downloading random stuff just because someone says to... dangerous, man.
Second, when i go to quickmask the color in the color box does not indicate the color i'm painting with (red, since that's what i have it set at)
When you out of Quick Mask, make sure you don't have the selection hidden.
Cmd H or Ctrl H should check this.
