I am having a little problem while making a website. I use the slice tool to link. I try using TARGET option while I am in the slice select tool. But it doesn't work. Then I use URL and it works. But It opens up a new window. It is weird. Anyway I can link in photoshop to like index.html without opening a new window? I AM ONLY USING PHOTOSHOP NO HTML EDITOR!!! 10 points best answer!
I think you might be a bit confused about what Photoshop is, and what it can and can't do.
If you want/expect it to open "index.html" right in photoshop, it can't. Photoshop isn't a Text or HTML Editor, nor is it a web-browser. So even if you COULD click on images directly in Ps (which you can't) they would still have to open in another window (a browser like IE, Safari, Firefox, etc..) to be seen.
As for it "working" when you use url and not target.... that's how it works. You set the url to where you want the user to be redirected to when they click the image. "Target" has specific values that belong there which tell the browser whether to open the link in a new window/tab or not. Leave it blank or use "_self" to keep the link from opening in a new window/tab and use "_blank" to have it open in a new window/tab.
Photoshop isn't a web-builder program either. It only does the graphics for you and helps you to slice up the images for your site, and you have to write the mark up. Yes, when you save slices, it does offer you the option to save the html code along with it, and that's where the "target", "url", etc... come in handy (sort of) for the slice tool. Otherwise setting the url and target is pretty useless as it doesn't retain that information on/with the images themselves.
Perhaps that's what you mean when you say you're only using photoshop? You're using the code they gave you when you saved the slices? That file is technically your html editor. If you open it up in Notepad you'll see the mark up that browsers read and convert into working websites.
One last thing: Be aware that when Ps generates the HTML code for you, it uses an outdated mark up method (tables for the layout) which isn't recommended by today's standards. Don't expect to get recognized very well (if at all) by search engines. The html code they generate for you isn't meant to be used on a a real, working, live site. It's only good (kind of, but not really) in a pinch for a quickie preview to show a preview of it to see how it looks/feels -- if anything needs to be fixed/changed, to show clients how things are coming along, for approval, etc... but it's definitely not good to use for an actual working web site.
