I discovered a couple of old black and white images of my grandparents, and I made a decision to carry the photos to life with this neat Photoshop technique. My grandma was so psyched about it that she made some delicious cookies for me!
Okay, with out additional ado, this is the step by step process for coloring black and white photos. Impress your grandma/mother/girlfriend/what have you, and who knows? They could reward you with some cookies too!
1. Open an old black and white or sepia tone photo in Photoshop. Next, go over to tools and choose Edit in Quick Masks Mode (alternately hit Q on the keyboard).
2. Choose the Brush Device (B) and begin portray the photo. You will notice that the default colour when portray in Fast masks mode is inexperienced, that is okay, simply proceed with the portray process. Keep in mind, don't go loopy by portray all over the picture! Simply paint one specific area at a time. Let's say you want to color the eyes, simply paint the eyes only. Save the whole face, lips and clothes for later.
3. After getting painted the area that you just wish to colour, hit Q on the keyboard once more to pick out Edit in Commonplace Mode. It is best to see choice lines around the border of the picture in addition to the area that you have painted. That is ok although, just go over Select > Inverse or ctrl + shift + I on the keyboard. It will make the selection around the photograph go away, leaving only the choice around the area that you need to shade intact.
4. Go to Select > Feather (alt + ctrl + D) and feather the choice to make it good and smooth. Choose the feather radius between three to 5 pixels.
5. Go over to Picture > Changes > Hue/Saturation or ctrl+ U. It will open up the Hue/Saturation menu. Remember to tick on the Colorize verify box on the lower right hand corner.
6. Now you'll be able to proceed to color the picture by adjusting the hue, saturation and lightness sliders. It's also possible to get rid of the choice when coloring, by going over to View > Extras (ctrl + H). Remember its all about experimentation, so if you need get a skin tone colour for example, all you must do is tweak the hue and saturation sliders somewhat bit to get the specified color.
7. Repeat the steps on different areas of the photo.
Alright so that's how you shade a black and white or sepia tone photographs in Photoshop. Newcomers may discover this Photoshop tutorial slightly complicated, however rest assured that after a number of tries, it is a complete breeze. Give it a go!
